Dowoo Insys, the ultra-thin glass maker behind Galaxy Z Fold screens, is developing rollable cover glass for car OLED displays, possibly from the second half of 2027.
This report is based on TheElec's reporting. Dowoo Insys and Samsung have not confirmed it.
Key takeaways
- TheElec reports Dowoo Insys is co-developing glass covers for rollable car OLED screens with a Korean automotive electronics firm.
- Development is mid-stage. Commercialization could land between the second half of 2027 and 2028, if a carmaker adopts it.
- Galaxy foldable supply is not affected. TheElec says Dowoo's new Vietnam phone-glass plant is separate from the car project.
Dowoo Insys is developing ultra-thin glass covers for rollable car OLED screens, TheElec reported on October 23, 2026. Ultra-thin glass, or UTG, is the bendable glass layer protecting a folding panel. Dowoo's UTG already covers the inner screen of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series.
The glass targets center information displays, the main dashboard screen, plus in-car entertainment screens. TheElec says the partner is a major Korean automotive electronics company. It does not name the firm.
Why a Galaxy Z Fold glass maker wants into cars
The motive is dependence on one product. TheElec reports Dowoo earned 85.7 billion won in the first half of 2026. UTG accounted for 82.6 billion won of that, about 96%.
That revenue follows Samsung's foldable launch calendar. TheElec says production and deliveries cluster around new phone releases, which creates large seasonal swings. Demand for book-style models, tracked in our report on Samsung's book-style foldable market share, shapes much of Dowoo's year.
Car screens ship in far smaller volumes than phones. TheElec says premium vehicles can carry higher unit prices to offset that.
The contract timing matters. Dowoo recently converted its exclusive Samsung Display supply deal into a three-year long-term supply agreement, according to TheElec. The car glass project is its first work with another customer since that change.
How far along the rollable car glass is
Rollable car screens have used plastic film covers so far, TheElec reports. Plastic bends easily but scratches and dents more readily. Glass keeps a harder, flatter surface with less visible waviness and light distortion.
Glass also cracks under repeated bending and impact. TheElec names precise control of thickness and curvature as the core technical hurdle.
The glass is one part of a larger job. The OLED panel and the motorized mechanism that rolls the screen still need development and final integration. Car glass also differs from phone UTG in size and processing, so Dowoo needs dedicated equipment. TheElec lists Vietnam among candidate sites, with scale tied to future orders.
Dowoo Insys product track, from fixed curves to rolling screens
| Product | Format | Status | Route to market | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foldable phone UTG | 6 to 8 inch class | Mass production since 2019 | Samsung Display, Galaxy Z Fold series | Dowoo Insys, TheElec |
| Curved dashboard cover glass | 14-inch class, S-curved, fixed | Developed December 2021 | Automotive | Dowoo Insys |
| Large-area UTG samples | 10 to 18 inch | Testing as of July 2025 | Not disclosed | Newspim |
| Dual-layer foldable UTG | Phone, upper and lower layers | In development, September 2026 | Samsung Display panels for Google, Oppo and Vivo | TheElec |
| Rollable car UTG | Dashboard and entertainment screens | Mid-stage development | Korean automotive electronics partner | TheElec |
The 2021 glass covered a curved screen that never moves. The new project covers a screen that rolls and unrolls. That moves Dowoo from a shaping problem to a repeated-bending durability problem, the same challenge it already handles in foldable phones.
What this means for Galaxy foldable owners
| Group | What changes | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold owners and buyers | Nothing reported. No change to Fold glass supply or specs appears in the report. | TheElec |
| Future Galaxy foldable supply | Phone UTG capacity is growing separately. Dowoo's first Vietnam plant makes 1 million units a month. A second plant adds up to 2 million, with phase one due by January 2027. | TheElec, July 8, 2026 |
| Samsung Display | Its exclusive deal is now a three-year agreement, and Dowoo has taken on an outside customer. | TheElec |
| Drivers | Glass-covered rollable screens could appear from the second half of 2027 at the earliest, if a carmaker signs on. | TheElec |
If you are shopping for a foldable now, this story changes nothing about that decision. The signal to watch is whether car work ever competes with phone glass for capacity. TheElec's report says the two investments are kept apart.

Still unknown: the partner's name, which carmaker might adopt it, and where Dowoo will build. Dowoo is listed on KOSDAQ, Korea's tech-focused stock market, so a supply deal or plant decision would likely surface in a regulatory filing first.
Frequently asked questions
Does Dowoo Insys make the glass on the Galaxy Z Flip?
Not on current models, according to TheElec. Samsung split its UTG supply chains in 2021. TheElec reported in April 2025 that Flip UTG uses Corning glass etched by Econy, managed by Samsung Electronics. Fold UTG uses Schott glass processed by Dowoo, managed by Samsung Display. Our Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Flip 8 comparison covers the two phones' other differences.
Is Samsung making a rollable Galaxy phone?
Samsung has not announced one. Samsung Display showed "Rollable Flex" panel concepts on its Flex OLED site in 2021, SamMobile reported. Samsung's move past the standard Fold so far is the three-panel Galaxy Z TriFold. TheElec's Dowoo report covers car screens only.
